Q: How do you strip (overlay) seams on an EPDM roofing system?
A: Enhancing seams on an EPDM roofing system is a three-part process. You’ll need Weathered Membrane Cleaner, Mule-Hide Tape Primer and Mule-Hide Cured EPDM Cover Tape.
1. Clean with Weathered Membrane Cleaner. This holds true whether you’re installing a new membrane or working with one that has been in service. The cleaner helps loosen and remove dirt and other contaminants from the surface, leaving it suitable for the application of Mule-Hide Tape Primer.
Saturate a clean rag with the cleaner and scrub the area to be seamed following the application instructions. Allow the solvent to flash off; this typically takes less than five minutes.
2. Apply Mule-Hide Tape Primer or Low VOC Primer. The solvent-based primers provide one-step cleaning and priming of EPDM surfaces to promote excellent long-term adhesion with Mule-Hide Cured Cover Tape and other taped products.
Apply the primer in a thin, even coat following the application instructions. The coverage rate is 250 square feet per gallon. Allow the primer to flash off until tacky but not dry; it should not transfer to a dry finger touch.
3. Apply Mule-Hide Cured EPDM Cover Tape. The tape is a length of 60-mil EPDM membrane strip that has been factory-bonded to a 30-mil cured butyl rubber adhesive tape and rolled onto a release liner. The tape is solvent-free, easy to install and exceptionally strong. And it can reduce labor costs by up to 50 percent compared to seaming with adhesives.
When applying cover tape in a repair application, it must extend at least 3 inches from the edge of the cut or puncture on all sides. Rolls in 6-, 9- and 12-inch widths are available to accommodate a variety of needs.
Install the tape promptly after the primer flashes off to minimize potential dust contamination and promote adhesion in colder weather. Position the tape over the area to be covered and press down on the exposed portion using firm, even hand pressure across the entire area. Immediately roll the tape with a 2-inch roller using positive pressure. Review Mule-Hide Products specifications and details for specific application instructions.
Following these three simple steps will help ensure a long-lasting, high-performing seal that will stand up to the most extreme weather and use situations.
